Chuncheon, often celebrated as South Korea’s 'City of Lakes,' is the ultimate destination for families looking to blend the thrill of an epic South Korean journey with the practical needs of traveling with kids. Just a short train ride from Seoul, this city offers a refreshing change of pace, where stroller-accessible lakeside paths and whimsical theme parks replace the frantic energy of the capital. This itinerary focuses on ease of movement and high-engagement activities that will keep children entertained without exhausting the parents.
Following our Family Travel Guides philosophy, we have curated a selection of activities that prioritize accessibility and convenience. You will find that Chuncheon is remarkably welcoming to young travelers, offering plenty of green spaces and interactive museums. Whether you are navigating the scenic parks or indulging in the city's famous dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), this 3-day guide ensures a seamless experience for every member of the family.
Day 1: Scenic Rails and Island Escapes
Gimyujeong Rail Park
Start your morning with a unique pedal-powered adventure. This rail bike course follows an old railway line through the beautiful countryside. The four-seater bikes are perfect for families, and the route is mostly flat or downhill, making it easy to pedal even with little ones in tow. The path passes through themed tunnels with music and lights that kids absolutely love.
Nami Island (Namiseom)
Take a short ferry ride to this famous half-moon-shaped island. The entire island is a giant playground with wide, paved paths perfect for strollers. Kids can run free in the 'Picture Book Library,' visit the ostrich enclosure, or ride the Unicef Charity Train. It is a fantastic spot for a family picnic under the towering metasequoia trees.
Jade Garden Natural Arboretum
Designed with a 'Little Europe' theme, this arboretum features beautifully manicured gardens and easy walking trails. It is a peaceful environment for children to explore nature. The boardwalks are well-maintained, ensuring a smooth ride for strollers while parents enjoy the Tuscan-style architecture.
Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Street
End your first day at the city's most famous food street. While Dakgalbi is known for being spicy, many restaurants here offer a 'kid-friendly' non-spicy soy sauce version or fried rice. The street is pedestrian-only, allowing kids a bit of room to walk around safely after dinner.
Day 2: Bricks, Boats, and Skywalks
LEGOLAND Korea Resort
Spend your morning at the first Legoland built on an island. This world-class theme park is specifically designed for families with children aged 2 to 12. With seven themed lands and numerous interactive rides, it is the highlight of any family trip to Chuncheon. The park is fully stroller accessible and features numerous 'Baby Care' centers.
Soyanggang Skywalk
After the excitement of Legoland, head to the Soyanggang Skywalk. At 174 meters long, it is the longest transparent glass floor structure in Korea. Kids will be fascinated by the view of the water beneath their feet. Shoe covers are provided to protect the glass, and the area around the entrance features a large 'Soyanggang Maiden' statue and photo zones.
Soyang Dam & Boat Tour
A short drive leads you to one of the largest gravel dams in the world. From the summit, you can take a scenic boat ride across the reservoir. The gentle movement of the boat is relaxing for toddlers, and the cool breeze from the lake provides a perfect late-afternoon refresh.
Chuncheon Romantic Market
Experience a traditional Korean market with a modern twist. The walls are decorated with murals that tell the story of the market’s history. It is a great place to pick up some local snacks like 'gamja-bbang' (potato bread), which is a huge hit with children due to its soft texture and sweet filling.
Day 3: Culture, Art, and Lakeside Play
Gangwon Provincial Flower Garden
Begin your final day with a gentle stroll through this expansive garden. It is much quieter than Nami Island, offering a relaxed environment for kids to observe local flora. The garden includes a fountain area and several glasshouses that are accessible and educational for young curious minds.
Chuncheon National Museum
This is not your typical 'quiet' museum. It features an incredible 16-meter-high ultra-high-definition screen in the lobby showing immersive media art that will leave kids spellbound. The museum also has a dedicated 'Children’s Museum' wing with hands-on historical exhibits designed for play-based learning.
Gongjicheon Sculpture Park
This park is a local favorite for family outings. It features wide grassy fields and interesting sculptures scattered throughout the greenery. There is an adjacent water park area and a bridge that lights up beautifully in the evening. It is the perfect spot for kids to burn off their remaining energy.
KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon
Located right on the water's edge, this cultural hub is housed in a strikingly designed building. You can browse the art gallery, visit the design square for unique souvenirs, or simply enjoy a final lakeside coffee while the kids enjoy the open terrace. The sunset views over Uiamho Lake from here are spectacular.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Chuncheon with family is during the Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, averaging between 15°C and 22°C, which is ideal for the many outdoor activities on this itinerary. Summer (July and August) can be quite humid and rainy, while Winter (December to February) is very cold, though it offers a beautiful snowy landscape if you don't mind the chill.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the South Korean Won (KRW). Chuncheon is very modern, and credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, including small cafes and market stalls. However, it is always a good idea to carry a small amount of cash (roughly 50,000 KRW) for smaller street food vendors or locker rentals. Tipping is not expected and is not part of the culture in South Korea.
Getting Around
The most efficient way to reach Chuncheon from Seoul is the ITX-Cheongchun high-speed train, which takes about 60-70 minutes. Once in the city, taxis are affordable and plentiful; using the Kakao Taxi app is highly recommended for families to avoid waiting on the street. Most major attractions are within a 15-20 minute drive of each other. For a more local experience, the city bus system is reliable, though navigating it with a stroller can be challenging during peak hours.
