Best Time to Visit China

The best time for a family trip to China is during the spring (April to May) or autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild across the country—neither too hot for the kids in the south nor too cold in the north. Avoid the "Golden Week" (the first week of October) and the Chinese New Year period, as transport and attractions become extremely crowded and prices surge.

Currency & Money

China's currency is the Renminbi (RMB/Yuan). While cash is still accepted in many places, China is a leader in mobile payments. It is highly recommended to set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your international credit card before arrival. Tipping is not part of the culture in China and is generally not expected in restaurants or taxis, though small tips for private tour guides are appreciated.

Getting Around China

Intercity travel is best handled by China's incredible High-Speed Rail (HSR) network; it's punctual, comfortable, and has plenty of space for families. For longer distances, like Chengdu to Guilin, domestic flights are efficient. Within cities, the subway systems are world-class, clean, and mostly stroller-accessible with elevators at major exits. Didi (China's version of Uber) is also very affordable and can be used directly within the Alipay app.
