Best Time to Visit Brunei
The best time to visit Brunei is during the dry season from January to May. During these months, the weather is pleasant for hiking in Temburong and exploring the city on foot. Avoid the heavy monsoon rains from October to December, which can cause boat cancellations and make jungle trails slippery. If you visit during Hari Raya (after Ramadan), the Istana Nurul Iman opens to the public, offering a rare chance to see the Sultan's palace.
Currency & Money
Brunei uses the Brunei Dollar (BND), which is pegged 1:1 with the Singapore Dollar. In fact, Singaporean notes are widely accepted in Brunei. Cash is king for backpackers, especially for the $1 buses, water taxis, and night markets. While major hotels and malls accept cards, you will need a steady supply of small notes for daily life. Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill at a sit-down restaurant is appreciated.
Getting Around Brunei
Brunei's public transport system consists mainly of the 'Purple Buses' in the BSB area, which cost a flat rate of $1 BND. For inter-city travel, long-distance buses run between BSB, Tutong, and Kuala Belait. To reach Temburong, the public speedboat from the BSB jetty is the standard method, though the new Temburong Bridge now allows for car travel. For areas not covered by buses, the 'Dart' app (Brunei's version of Uber) is the most reliable and transparently priced transport option.
