3-Day Relaxed Family Guide to Banjarmasin
Welcome to Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan, where life revolves around the majestic Martapura River. This city offers a unique blend of aquatic tradition and modern Indonesian charm, making it a hidden gem for families looking for an authentic yet manageable adventure. Following our Family Travel Guides philosophy, this itinerary prioritizes shorter travel times and accessible locations to ensure a smooth experience for those traveling with children.
Known as the 'City of a Thousand Rivers,' Banjarmasin is remarkably affordable and welcoming. We have curated a 3-day journey that balances the excitement of river culture with the comfort of air-conditioned escapes and stroller-friendly walkways. Get ready to experience the iconic floating markets and lush riverside parks without the usual travel stress.
Day 1: Banjarmasin - Riverside Traditions & Icons
Siring Floating Market (Pasar Terapung Siring)
Begin your journey at the most accessible floating market in the city. Unlike Lok Baintan which requires a very early boat ride, the Siring market is located right along the city embankment. It’s perfect for families to watch vendors trade from their 'jukung' (small boats) while staying on the paved, stroller-friendly walkway.
Menara Pandang Siring
Located just a short walk from the market, this four-story observation tower provides a panoramic view of the Martapura River and the city skyline. It’s an easy climb (with elevator access often available) that helps kids visualize the river's winding paths.
Patung Bekantan (Proboscis Monkey Statue)
A few minutes away is the giant statue of the Bekantan, the long-nosed monkey native to Borneo. The area around the statue is a wide plaza where children can run around safely, and it features a water fountain that sprays into the river, which is a big hit with the little ones.
Riverside Culinary Walk
End your day with a stroll along Jalan Pierre Tendean. The area comes alive in the evening with street food vendors. Grab a table at one of the riverside cafes to enjoy 'Soto Banjar' while watching the colorful 'klotok' (motorized boats) pass by.
Day 2: Banjarmasin - Heritage & Local Life
Kampung Sasirangan
Explore this colorful textile village where the traditional Banjar fabric, Sasirangan, is made. The streets are narrow but paved, allowing for a gentle walk to see the hand-dyeing process. It’s a great place to pick up unique, lightweight souvenirs that won't weigh down your luggage.
Sabilal Muhtadin Great Mosque
Visit the largest mosque in the province, famous for its massive turquoise dome and park-like grounds. The surrounding gardens are exceptionally peaceful and provide plenty of shade, making it a respectful and cool spot for a mid-day break.
Taman Maskot (Mascot Park)
Designed specifically for families, this park features statues of the city’s mascots (the Bekantan and the Kasturi fruit). It has a small playground and well-maintained paths, offering a perfect low-energy environment for kids to burn off steam while parents relax on the benches.
Dinner at Depot Soto Bang Amat
Located right on the riverbank, this is perhaps the most famous spot in town for Soto Banjar. The restaurant is spacious and casual, making it very kid-friendly. Enjoy live traditional 'Panting' music while you eat over the water.
Day 3: Banjarmasin - River Adventures & Modern Comforts
Pulau Kembang Boat Tour
Rent a private 'klotok' boat from the Siring pier for a short trip to Kembang Island. This island is a forest sanctuary filled with macaques. While you should stay on the boardwalk and keep snacks hidden from the monkeys, the boat ride itself is the highlight for most children.
Duta Mall Banjarmasin
After a morning on the river, head to the city's largest mall to cool off. It’s the perfect place for a familiar lunch at the food court and features a large, modern supermarket for any baby supplies or snacks you might need for the journey ahead.
Trans Studio Mini
Located inside the mall complex, this indoor theme park offers rides and games suitable for various ages. It’s an ideal way to spend the hottest part of the afternoon in a safe, air-conditioned environment that kids will love.
Siring Night Market Walk
For your final evening, return to the Siring area to see it transformed by colorful lights. There are often small carnival-style rides and toy vendors, providing a festive atmosphere to celebrate the end of your Banjarmasin adventure.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Banjarmasin is during the dry season, from June to September. During these months, the river levels are stable and outdoor markets are less likely to be interrupted by heavy rain. However, being a tropical city, the weather is warm year-round, typically hovering between 25°C and 32°C. Morning activities are recommended to avoid the midday humidity.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While larger hotels and malls like Duta Mall accept major credit cards, Banjarmasin is still very much a cash-based society, especially for boat rentals, street food, and traditional markets. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up the bill for taxi drivers or boatmen is a kind gesture widely appreciated by locals.
Getting Around
For families, the most convenient way to get around on land is using ride-hailing apps like Grab or Gojek, which offer both cars and motorbikes (though cars are recommended for families). For river travel, 'klotoks' are the standard mode of transport. You can easily find them at the Siring pier. If you're traveling with a stroller, keep it to the main riverside parks and malls, as many side streets may have uneven pavement.
