Best Time & Weather
The best time for a family trip to Akureyri is between June and August. During these months, you’ll experience the 'Midnight Sun,' meaning 24 hours of daylight, which is great for flexible schedules. Temperatures are mild, ranging from 10°C to 15°C (50°F - 60°F). If you prefer a winter wonderland, December offers festive lights and a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights, though it is much colder and darker.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Icelandic Króna (ISK). However, Iceland is almost entirely cashless. You can pay for everything—from a single ice cream to a taxi—with a credit or debit card. Tipping is not expected and is already included in the price of service in restaurants and hotels. If you do wish to tip for exceptional service, it is appreciated but never mandatory.
Getting Around
Akureyri is very easy to navigate. Within the city center, walking is the best option as most attractions are close together. For the few spots outside the center, the city provides a free bus service (Strætisvagnar Akureyrar), which is stroller-friendly and easy to use.
