Day 1: Panama City, Panama - Colonial Charm & Coastal Views

Lunch at Fish Market (Mercado de Mariscos)

Biking on the Amador Causeway

Best Time to Visit Panama
The best time to visit Panama for families is during the dry season, which runs from mid-December to mid-April. This period offers sunny days and minimal rain, making it easier to plan outdoor activities and beach trips. If you visit during the 'green season' (May to November), expect short, heavy afternoon showers, but enjoy lower prices and lusher landscapes.
Currency & Money
Panama uses the US Dollar (USD) alongside the Panamanian Balboa, which is pegged 1:1 to the dollar. You will mostly see US bills but may receive Balboa coins. Credit cards are widely accepted in Panama City and El Valle, but it's helpful to carry small denominations of cash for markets and smaller cafes. Tipping 10% is standard in restaurants.
Getting Around Panama
For family travel, renting a car is the most convenient way to move between Panama City and El Valle. Roads are generally well-paved. Within Panama City, Uber is very affordable and safer than traditional taxis. For longer distances, domestic flights from Albrook Airport can save time, but for this 5-day route, a private car or rental provides the most flexibility for stroller storage and unscheduled stops.
