Uyuni, famous for its surreal landscapes, can be surprisingly family-friendly if you follow a relaxed pace and prioritize comfort. Traveling at 3,700 meters above sea level requires careful planning. We recommend spending your first day acclimating in the town center before heading out into the vast salt desert. With wide-open spaces for kids to run and unique salt-carved architecture, Uyuni offers a playground like no other for families seeking a truly adventurous yet accessible vacation.
The Itinerary
Day 1: Uyuni - Ghosts of the Rails and Local Life
Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes)
Located just on the outskirts of town, this open-air museum features dozens of rusted steam locomotives from the early 20th century. It is a giant playground for kids who love to climb and explore history hands-on.
Lunch at Plaza Arce
Enjoy a relaxed meal at one of the many cafes surrounding the main square. The area is flat and stroller-friendly, making it easy to find a spot like The Minuteman Revolutionary Pizza for a familiar kid-friendly favorite.
Museo de la Llama y la Sal
A short drive from the center, this small but charming museum teaches children about the local salt mining culture and the importance of llamas in the Andes. It is indoors and easy to navigate with a family.

Day 2: Uyuni - The Great White Wonders
Colchani Salt Workshops
Start your day in the village of Colchani, the gateway to the salt flats. Families can watch locals process salt and browse handicraft markets for unique souvenirs made entirely of salt crystals.
Dakar Monument & Salt Hotel Museum
Drive onto the Salar to see the famous Dakar Rally monument. Nearby, the Playa Blanca Salt Hotel (now a museum/rest stop) provides a fascinating look at furniture and walls built entirely from salt blocks.
Perspective Photo Fun
Spend the afternoon on the flat white expanse. The lack of depth perception makes it the perfect spot for "forced perspective" family photos—kids love pretending to be giants or being stepped on by a giant toy dinosaur.
Sunset over the Salar
Watch the sky turn vibrant shades of pink and orange. If traveling during the wet season (Jan-March), the thin layer of water creates a perfect mirror reflection that is magical for all ages.
Day 3: Uyuni - Markets and Mining History

Experience the vibrant local colors and smells. This is a great place to stock up on fresh fruit and local snacks. The wide aisles in the main section are manageable with a compact stroller.
Farewell Lunch at Tika
Treat the family to a final meal at Tika, known for its modern take on Bolivian ingredients and comfortable, family-oriented atmosphere.
Pulacayo Historic Mining Village
Take a 30-minute trip to this historic site. It houses the train that was famously robbed by Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It's a quiet, educational spot that is less crowded than the main salt flat tours.
Souvenir Shopping on Avenida Ferroviaria
Before your departure, take a final walk down the main street to pick up alpaca wool sweaters and hats, perfect for keeping the kids warm during the rest of your Bolivian adventure.
Best Time & Weather
The best time to visit Uyuni with a family is during the dry season from May to October. The days are clear and sunny, making the ground stable for driving and walking. If you want to see the famous mirror effect, visit between January and March, but be prepared for occasional rain and muddy roads which can make stroller use more difficult.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Boliviano (BOB). While some hotels and upscale restaurants in Uyuni accept credit cards, cash is essential for markets, small cafes, and tips. There are several ATMs near Plaza Arce, but they can occasionally run out of cash, so it is wise to carry some USD or Bolivianos from La Paz or Potosi.
Getting Around
The town of Uyuni is small and very walkable. For the salt flats, you must hire a 4x4 vehicle with a driver. For families, we highly recommend booking a private tour rather than a shared one; this allows you to adjust the schedule if the children get tired or need more frequent breaks. Taxis are also readily available for short trips within the town for a very low fixed cost.
