Best Time to Visit Asia
For Central Asia, specifically Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, April is arguably the best month of the year. In Uzbekistan, you avoid the blistering summer heat (which can exceed 40°C) while enjoying the spring blossoms. In Southern Kazakhstan, the steppes turn a vibrant green and wild tulips—the genetic ancestor of all garden tulips—bloom in the wild. If you travel too early in March, it can still be chilly; by late May, the desert heat begins to intensify.
Visas & Border Crossings
Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan have significantly relaxed their visa policies. Most Western, European, and many Asian citizens now enjoy visa-free entry for 30 days. The land border between Tashkent (Uzbekistan) and Shymkent (Kazakhstan) is the busiest in the region. While generally efficient, expect to spend 1-2 hours for the crossing. Always keep your passport and a copy of your e-visa (if applicable) handy. It is also important to keep your registration slips in Uzbekistan, though many hotels now provide these digitally.
Getting Around Asia
This itinerary focuses on the unique rail infrastructure of Central Asia. Uzbekistan's high-speed Afrosiyob trains are world-class but must be booked weeks in advance. For longer stretches, the Soviet-legacy sleeper trains offer a nostalgic and social experience. In Kazakhstan, the modern Talgo trains are efficient, clean, and fast. For local transit within cities, Yandex Go is the essential ride-sharing app, offering fixed prices and safe, reliable transport for families.
