Best Time to Visit Asia
July is the peak summer season in Central Asia. While the lowland cities in Uzbekistan can be quite hot (often exceeding 35°C), this is the absolute best time to visit the mountains of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The high-altitude passes are clear of snow, and the 'jailoos' (summer pastures) are filled with yurts and nomadic families. It is also a time for vibrant summer festivals and open-air markets. Pack light, breathable clothing for the cities and warm layers for the mountain evenings.
Visas & Border Crossings
Most Western travelers (US, UK, EU, Canada) can now enjoy visa-free entry to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan for short stays. Border crossings on this route (particularly Almaty to Bishkek) are routine for international tourists, but always ensure you have printed copies of your passport and any accommodation bookings. When crossing from Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan, be prepared for a short walk through the pedestrian customs zone with your luggage.
Getting Around Asia
For this multi-country route, a mix of transport is best. In Uzbekistan, the Afrosiyob high-speed train is world-class and very family-friendly. For crossing the vast distances between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, a regional flight is highly recommended. Within Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, private car transfers offer the most flexibility for families to stop at scenic viewpoints. In cities, apps like Yandex Go work across the region and provide transparent pricing for taxis.
