Best Time to Visit Asia
The Caucasus region of Western Asia is best visited during the shoulder seasons. April is a highlight for the 'Spring Blooming' season, where temperatures range from 15°C to 22°C (59°F to 72°F). While the mountain passes may still have snow, the capital cities are lush and vibrant. Autumn (September to October) is another excellent choice, offering harvest festivals and stable, golden weather. Summers can be quite hot in Baku and Yerevan, often exceeding 35°C (95°F), making the mild spring breeze of April ideal for family travel.
Visas & Border Crossings
Traveling between Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia requires careful planning. Most Western travelers can enter Georgia visa-free for up to a year. Azerbaijan typically requires an ASAN E-Visa, which is easily obtained online. Armenia offers visa-free or E-visa entry for many nationalities. Crucially, while you can travel from Azerbaijan to Georgia and then to Armenia, the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is closed. Always travel via Georgia when moving between the two. Keep your physical passport and printed copies of E-visas ready at all rail border checkpoints.
Getting Around Asia
For this Western Asia route, rail is the most scenic and culturally immersive option. The Baku-Tbilisi overnight train is a legendary experience, though modern Stadler high-speed trains are used for the Tbilisi-Batumi leg. For the Georgia-Armenia crossing, private transfers or the South Caucasus Railway are preferred. Within cities, ride-sharing apps like Bolt and Yandex are highly affordable and safe for families. For mountain excursions, hiring a private driver for the day is often the most cost-effective way to manage a family group on a budget of USD 44.85 per person/day.
