Best Time to Visit United States
The best time for this cross-country route is during the Shoulder Seasons: Spring (April to June) or Autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather in New York and DC is mild, Florida isn't yet at its peak summer heat or hurricane risk, and California enjoys clear, sunny days. Avoiding the peak of July and August will also mean shorter lines at theme parks and more comfortable walking conditions for families with small children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the US Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, from street food stalls to major retailers. Tipping is a standard part of the culture; expect to tip 18-22% at sit-down restaurants and a few dollars for hotel porters or valets. It is helpful to keep a small amount of cash for laundromats or small tips, but generally, you can rely on contactless payments throughout this itinerary.
Getting Around United States
For a 20-day trip covering this much ground, a combination of transport methods is best. The Northeast Corridor (NYC to DC) is most efficiently served by Amtrak trains. For the long jumps (DC to Orlando, Orlando to Vegas, Vegas to San Diego), domestic flights are the only way to keep the pace relaxed. Once in Florida and California, renting a car is highly recommended for family flexibility, though cities like NYC and DC are best explored via their comprehensive (and mostly accessible) subway and bus systems.
