Best Time to Visit Timor Leste
The best time to visit Timor Leste is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This period offers the clearest skies for mountain trekking and the best visibility for diving on Atauro Island. The roads are also much more reliable during these months, which is crucial for a 17-day journey across the country. If you are interested in whale watching, plan your visit for October or November when the annual migration passes through the Ombai-Wetar Strait.
Currency & Money
Timor Leste officially uses the United States Dollar (USD). While there are ATMs in Dili and Baucau (mostly BNU or ANZ), they can be unreliable in remote areas like Tutuala or Maubisse. It is essential to carry sufficient cash for small purchases and tips. Credit cards are accepted at major hotels like the Hilton and Hotel Timor, but most local establishments are cash-only. Tipping is not mandatory but is highly appreciated for exceptional service from private drivers and guides.
Getting Around Timor Leste
For a luxury-focused itinerary, private transport is the only recommended option. The public 'mikrolet' system is crowded and inefficient for long distances. We recommend hiring a private 4WD (like a Toyota Land Cruiser) with an experienced driver-guide for the duration of the trip. This ensures safety on the winding mountain roads and allows for flexibility in your schedule. For reaching Atauro Island, private boat charters are faster and more comfortable than the public ferry. Domestic flights are very limited and usually restricted to small charter planes like MAF for medical or NGO use.
