Embark on an epic 16-day journey through the rugged 'Northern' corridor of the Eastern Middle East. This route skips the glitzy malls in favor of the dramatic Hajar Mountains, the turquoise fjords of Musandam, and the ancient, snow-dusted citadels of Iraqi Kurdistan. In January, you'll escape the scorching heat, finding perfect hiking weather in the south and a true winter wonderland in the north.
Traveling on an ultra-lean budget of $17.36 per day requires a strategic approach: utilizing shared taxis (service), eating at local 'Chai Khanas', and choosing hostels or budget guesthouses. This itinerary is designed for the hardy backpacker who values raw scenery and cultural depth over luxury.

Best Time to Visit Middle East
For the Eastern Middle East, particularly Oman and the UAE, the winter months from November to February are ideal, offering pleasant daytime temperatures around 20-25°C. However, for Iraqi Kurdistan, January is peak winter. While the cities remain accessible, the mountains will be covered in snow, and temperatures can drop below freezing at night. This is the 'Low Season' for the Gulf but a beautiful 'Winter Season' for Kurdistan, perfect for budget travelers seeking dramatic, snowy landscapes without the crowds.
Visas & Border Crossings
Oman and the UAE offer relatively straightforward visa-on-arrival or e-visas for many nationalities (EU, USA, UK, etc.). Crossing from Khasab (Oman) to Ras Al Khaimah (UAE) by land is a common route, but ensure you have your exit/entry stamps and any required e-visas printed. Iraqi Kurdistan operates its own visa regime separate from Federal Iraq; most Western travelers get a free 30-day stamp upon arrival at Erbil or Sulaymaniyah airports, but this stamp does NOT allow travel to Baghdad or southern Iraq.
Getting Around Middle East
In Oman, the Mwasalat bus network is excellent for major routes, while 'service' (shared) taxis are the primary way to reach smaller mountain towns. In the UAE, use the inter-city bus system which is high-quality and very cheap. In Iraqi Kurdistan, shared taxis (found at 'Garages') are the only real way to move between cities; they depart when full and are very affordable. For international hops, look at budget airlines like Air Arabia, FlyDubai, and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, which have revolutionized low-cost travel in the region.
