Best Time to Visit Americas
April is a transitional but beautiful month in the Eastern Americas. In Washington D.C., you catch the tail end of the Cherry Blossom Festival, while New York City sees the first vibrant green leaves and tulip displays. As you move north into Canada, the weather remains cool (ranging from 5°C to 12°C), meaning you should pack layers. This 'shoulder season' is ideal for families as the massive summer crowds haven't yet arrived, and the rail prices are significantly lower than in July or August.
Visas & Border Crossings
Traveling between the USA and Canada is generally straightforward. Most Western travelers require an ESTA for the USA and an eTA for Canada if arriving by air. However, when crossing the land border by train (like the Amtrak Adirondack), you will undergo customs and immigration processing on the train or at the station. Ensure all family members have at least six months of passport validity. Always check for the latest 'ArriveCAN' requirements or similar digital declarations before crossing into Canada.
Getting Around Americas
For this route, the train is the superior choice. The Northeast Corridor (D.C. to Boston) is served by Amtrak's high-speed Acela and the frequent Northeast Regional. Crossing into Canada, the Adirondack line offers unparalleled scenery compared to a flight. Within the cities, the D.C. Metro and NYC Subway are efficient, while Montreal and Quebec City are very walkable. For longer city distances, Uber and Lyft are widely available and often cheaper for a family of four than individual transit tickets.
