Best Time to Visit Timor Leste
The best time to visit Timor Leste is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During these months, the weather is sunny and the roads are more reliable for travel between Dili and Baucau. For families, this period offers the calmest seas for the ferry to Atauro Island and the most pleasant temperatures for outdoor exploration.
Currency & Money
Timor Leste uses the US Dollar (USD) as its official currency, which makes it very convenient for many international travelers. However, they also use their own centavo coins for denominations smaller than a dollar. While Dili has several ATMs (mostly BNU or ANZ), they can be unreliable, and card acceptance is limited to major hotels. Always carry plenty of small-denomination cash, especially when traveling to Baucau or Atauro Island.
Getting Around Timor Leste
Intercity travel in Timor Leste is primarily done by road. For families, hiring a private 4WD vehicle with a driver is highly recommended as public 'mikrolets' (minibuses) can be very crowded and lack safety features. To reach Atauro Island, the Dragon Star fast ferry or the slower government ferry (Nakroma) are the main options. Within Dili, taxis are plentiful and affordable, but always agree on the fare before starting your journey.
