Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
The best time for this itinerary is from June to September. During these months, the mountain passes are clear of snow, and the weather in the Fan Mountains is pleasantly warm. Dushanbe can be quite hot in July and August, but the high-altitude escapes provide a perfect, cool refuge. For those who prefer cooler temperatures in the cities, late May and early October are also excellent choices.
Currency & Money
The official currency is the Tajikistani Somoni (TJS). While luxury hotels and high-end restaurants in Dushanbe and Khujand accept major credit cards (Visa/Mastercard), Tajikistan remains a cash-heavy society. You will need Somoni for smaller purchases and tips. Tipping is generally 10% in upscale restaurants, though often included in the bill. US Dollars are the most easily exchanged foreign currency at banks and official exchange offices.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For a luxury experience, private SUV transport (specifically Toyota Land Cruisers or similar 4x4s) is the only recommended way to travel between cities and into the mountains. Roads in the Fan Mountains are rugged and require experienced drivers.
