Best Time to Visit Tajikistan
The best time for a family trip to Tajikistan is during the late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October). During these months, the weather in Dushanbe and Khujand is pleasantly warm rather than scorching, and the mountain passes are clear of snow. Summer (July-August) can be extremely hot in the cities, exceeding 40°C (104°F), which may be difficult for young children.
Currency & Money
The local currency is the Tajik Somoni (TJS). While credit cards are increasingly accepted in major hotels and upscale restaurants in Dushanbe, Tajikistan remains a cash-heavy society. You will need cash for bazaars, smaller guesthouses, and intercity transport. ATMs are available in cities, but it is wise to carry US Dollars or Euros to exchange as a backup. Tipping is generally around 10% in restaurants, often included automatically in the bill.
Getting Around Tajikistan
For families, the best way to get around is by hiring a private car and driver. While 'shared taxis' are the standard for locals, they can be cramped and don't depart until full. A private hire gives you control over the pace and safety. Within Dushanbe, the 'Yak Taxi' app is highly recommended—it works similarly to Uber and allows you to book clean, modern cars with transparent pricing. There are currently no passenger rail services connecting the major cities in this itinerary.
